Thank you very much Dewey Cox. When Walk Hard strutted onto the screen the bio pic was on notice for what it should have always been called out for: Excess, silliness and over-the-top decadence. However, when it comes to our music stars and the story of their lives, isn’t that all what we want? As Elvis gets the Baz Luhrman treatment there’s no better time than now to look at the best of what we wanted, what we sorta suspected and some of our favorite tunes, we’ll turn it to eleven for the prep work this week.

We’re going to need you to lean in and find all the synergy, iterations, business-isms, buzzy and best movies around just like your boss gets excited to tell you about how you’re doing in the lead up to your big annual review. We can guarantee that we won’t 2% you this time around (that’s what annual reviews are for, right?). Our best of the year is a little more relaxed than your qualified critics or self-righteous friends. We are looking for some laughs, feelings, vision and sometimes big buckets of popcorn to be devoured. So, here we go with our pulse check on 2022, and let me tell you that this year has been an incredible ride back into a year we may end up talking about for some years to come. Our FavesWhat is Movie Night Mix you ask? If you're new to our community, the mix is all about things that are just aside from the norm, a little messy movie crew - family, friends, a Friday night with fellow movie lovers, and nights where Adam Sandler buddy comedies fit right alongside wholesome Steve Martin family flicks for Field Day Week.
Grown Ups and Cheaper By the Dozen 2 personify the build up to THE BIG DAY. A basketball rematch or a family tradition gone awry help these harmless (and let's call them what they are: FUN) movies make the cut. As the school year winds down, here's hoping that you and the crew get a day in the sun for the egg toss, 100 yard-dash and the rematch 365 days in the making. No week which focuses on an against all odds win, feats of strength and series of physical fitness events would be complete without going back to school with Frank the Tank in Old School. As wholesome as Cheaper By the Dozen 2 is, Old School is as rowdy but does have a through-line into Field Day Week. To save the fraternity - you know the story - Frank and the crew will push all the chips in with some traditional activities annnnnndddd some less than traditional routes and games, too. The picks for an unlikely trilogy of friends are in for this week: 1. Grown Ups 2. Cheaper By the Dozen 2 3. Old School Let us know your picks for an unlikely trio or the movies which culminate in a big competition, taking you right back to 4th grade races, relays and feats of incredible athleticism. 👇🏾👇🏽👇🏻 Adapting the mindset of a nine year-old, once the calendar flips to May, summer break might as well be here. One of our favorite things growing up was picking up Premiere or Entertainment Weekly to devour the top upcoming movies for the long, hot days ahead. Now that we’re grown and the concept of a magazine dates is even more, the excitement across kids, teens and adults around the next batch of movies still gets us exited to bring it all together and talk what’s new. As Sonic and The Bad Guys fill the movie void in April, we will get the kids hyped up for what feels like a summer where there are plenty of hits, box-office ramps back up and we go on the lookout for those movies that maybe fill a couple of hours to beat the heat and if we’re lucky enough are great and create some memories in another summer in the books.
Our week-long look at March is up with a surprisingly moving sports flick starring Ben Affleck. Lost and buried in March, 2020, The Way Back toes the line between two tough spots: Alcoholism and Sports. Two tough spots because if they are done wrong, melodrama, schmaltz and sappiness are sure to follow. Gavin O'Connor and Affleck avoid the pitfalls and clichés, delivering a terrific mix of authenticity, drama and on-the-court action. One to go back and catch, whether you are a sports fan or not as it is much, much more than just that.
300. Zack Snyder. March 2007. As the Snyder Cut has finally seen the day of light, going back to the visual experience which was 300, already 14 years ago, it was clear that a blockbuster maker was here. Double-feature with 300 & The Way Back - who would come up with that? Movie Night Masters, that's who. Got a March release from years ago that we should add to the list, drop them in the comments.
The monthly look back opens up a world of possibilities and this March remix is one of the most eclectic in recent memory. Whether it was the arrival of Katness Everdeen on the big screen, what felt like 1,000 ways to die with Final Destination, Spielberg being Spielberg once again with Ready Player One and a goofy, raunchy trip in a Hot Tub Time Machine. It's March with a twist, turn and nod back to some of our favorites for a one-of-a-kind mashup.
Ever feel overwhelmed with too many choices for what to watch next? For those of us that probably got a toooooo hyped during the halftime show we can remember a time when having endless movies at our fingertips required a pile from Blockbuster. Now, our dreams have come true but we scroll, scroll, scroll the night away and where does it get us? A Soderbergh doubleheader from @hbomax brings together one of our 2021 favorites and somehow in less than a year, in typical Soderbergh fashion, another excellent entry into his filmography and the kickoff to 2022 being the year of Zoe Kravitz.
We’ve got you with a new dive into the vast world of streaming. We’ve shown the cable companies by tripling our bill with our expertise at cord-cutting, so now you’re up next to reap the benefits. Streaming Week is up! I WANT YOU BACK A fun refresh of the traditional rom-com with winning performances and chemistry from Jenny Slate and Charlie Day. Platform: Amazon Prime KIMI Soderbergh and Kravitz with a tight, compact 90-minute thriller very much for this moment in time. When the second act hits, Soderbergh shoots the panic and anxiety in such a way that it drops you into Kravitz’s character or reminds us that we very well may be seeing a reflection of ourselves and how we’d re-enter society, hopefully with a bit lower stakes than what is at stake in KIMI. Platform: HBO Max What collaborations could set the box-office on fire, create new IP or Franchises and be the stars of the 20s? Hang out with us as we go to the whiteboard and brainstorm what could be throughout 2022 with something of a fantasy draft for collaborations we’d like to see soon.
Jordan Peele Movie + Tom Holland Hollywood needs a definitive star for the younger generation to latch onto and go on a ride with them where each movie becomes an event. Judging by the crowds I saw President’s Day Weekend, Tom Holland is very much that person teens are going to see whether Spider-Man or not. Now, the out of the park element would be to take the Director where each movie with their name on it is an event, Jordan Peele, and combine an original concept from him starring Tom Holland. Univers(al) let’s make this happen, please. Jim Carrey + Ryan Reynolds Seeing Jim Carrey back in the biggest goofball role as Dr. Robotnik has been one of the great pleasures from movies over the past couple of years. Living through the 90s, the elastic man, catch phrases and sheer lunacy felt like home and now another generation gets to feel the same as Sonic 2 comes out in April. As we scan the landscape for potential dream collaborations and matchups, Ryan Reynolds and Jim Carrey together as maybe a father-son duo on the road would get my money in a minute. Both wisecracking actors together could bring together a jolt of comedy that big movies could use and also create that ever elusive franchise creation all the studios look for in 2022. We loved The Batman and it more than lived up to the hype but now it’s onto the next thing as we sift through the Spring Mix. Up this week: Can Channing, Sandra and Brad ignite a fire at the box-office, what does Morbius bring and does Dumbledore have another run in him? We’ll also toss in some of the smaller picks that shouldn’t be missed. P. S., this account will quickly become a Robert Eggers Stan account.
