Like Thanos, for some of us cold weather is inevitable. Carol at work will surely drop a “Brrr, it’s getting chilly out there! Good thing I’ve got my fifth cup of coffee before 9,” you’ll laugh, die a little inside - you know the drill this time of year. However, Carol is onto something with the cold weather and staying warm but that’s where we end our agreements with her and choose to dive into cold weather flicks to keep us warm. We’re celebrating the tundras, quiet coldness and all things cold this week. Also, why are we obsessed with Carol? When the snow falls it triggers something in us to climb onto the couch and mirror what we see outside. In this case maybe mirroring our movie-watching with what we see outside might not be ideal as we take on two seemingly doomed journeys in the elements. If you’re looking for the fear and freeze but from the safety of your couch, we recommend The Revenant and Vertical Limit. It’s okay if your bring a blanket, hand warmers and hot chocolate - we don’t judge. Surprising emotional weight to it ✅ - we’re definitely talking Eight Below here in a better than you might think title with the Disney stamp + sled dogs on the surface. A deeper-cut Paul Walker favorite of ours this one is sure to surprise. Now, Out Cold, what can we say but a perfect summary of the now seemingly chaotic nature of random studio movies form the early ‘00s. Galifinakis, a London brother, sheer idiocy and early ‘00s cold weather celebration at the peak of coldness - a ski resort.

If you don’t join in it’s okay, we’ll send our besties to help you out. See you all weekend for the start of the mix! Whatever the dog days of winter are it might feel like that right now for someone out there, plus the weight of well - trying to lose weight - this time of year we could all use a lift from cinematic pals, friends and motivators. Maybe you need to write your own Dracula opera, get knocked down just to get back up one more time or maybe most of all get busy living or get busy dying.
With the massive success of Top Gun:Maverick, it's clear that movie studios should take note of the power of nostalgia and bringing back beloved franchises but in a very specific way of melding the past with a bit of regret and realism with a foundation for the inevitable future without the franchise’s stars of yesterday. The combination of a beloved property with a talented cast and crew resulted in a critically acclaimed and financially successful film but what was different with this one? There’s no denying people wanted to see Tom Cruise as Maverick one more time but there was an in-theatre experience considered, presented with one foot in nostalgia and the other in a heightened, simple reality. As we look to the future of the industry, it's important to remember the value of honoring the past and giving the audience a good time on the other end of the product, not just consumers looking for the next drip of an obligation - utility-like movie. We all want more.
