In our series Then & Now, going back to the start vs. an artist's current work can lead to excitement, puzzlement, reflection and sheer joy at the evolution of the roles, movies, catalog. With the release of Da 5 Bloods and The King of Staten Island, in a weird time for movies with no box office buzz, these two movies released to streaming on the same day feels like another world where buzz built and built into a Friday frenzy. Having not seen either just yet, this is a prime opportunity to look back at two picks for the middle of June.
School Daze from Spike Lee and The 40 Year-Old Virgin represent the 'Then' with singular looks that seem to only be able to be delivered by Lee and Apatow. The double-feature opportunities are endless throughout these two's films, but going back to the beginning is sometimes where you need to go to remember what you first loved or the possibility of capturing that magic in a bottle one more time. WHAT'S TO EAT? Back to the spot where you went as a kid. Does the place hold up or were those rose-colored lenses as a kid clouding your vision? Pizza still as good? Eehhhhh. Sliders hold up? Then & Now your food too. Make it a great night.
