8 MILEWhen you think about The Last Twenty minutes of the movie, sometimes that can be the make a break spot for you to consider thisncinematic effort as one for the ages or one that makes you feel as though you wasted 2 hours of your life. No pressure Mr. or Mrs. filmmaker, huh? Sometimes the last twenty minutes can also flip #movie around to become a bit more tolerable but I feel like that is rarely the case.
In the spirit of The Last Twenty, I take a look at a prime example of the last 20 impacting the memory, in this case it is '8 Mile.' Back in 2002, this collaboration between the late Curtis Hanson and Eminem would seem to be a bit of a head scratcher when first announced. In hindsight, the pair could not have been any better together but the memory of the movie for me is the last few scenes and that is a testament to the strength and energy of the rap battle. A gritty underdog approach that doesn't grasp for the most stereotypical aspects, driven by the performance and chemistry of Eminem and Brittany Murphy, as well as Mekhi Phifer's foundation as the emcee and friend. In the end, with no more than what he started out with - music, no beats and no more regard for how things turn out - fingers in the air and you've got a molotov cocktail, one part anarchy and the other Karate Kid. Most importantly, a payoff just as good as the performances, music and expectations being exceeded in the end. What to Eat?
